  1. Squire and Farmer was a lovely little family business with good quality products and service to match. Situated in High Street near the Baptist Chapel, it was run by Mr Squire, a quietly -spoken gentleman who travelledto work from his Cardiff home each day. I knew him in the 1970s- alas! before my interest in the history of Merthyr’s High Street shops started – and now I wish I knew more about him and his shop. His items were not priced in guineas at that time. His son followed him into the business , closed the little shop and opened a larger, less inviting-looking one on the corner where The Dic Penderyn restaurant now stands.. I don’t know how long it lasted but the days of family- run businesses in Merthyr High Streeet were ending and the smart Habitats and Ikeas were on their way to Cardiff.
